Investment tools that can provide a guaranteed source of income.

An attractive addition to your retirement savings portfolio

Annuities originate with insurance companies. They are contracts that call for you to pay a sum of money, called a premium, and then receive certain payments in the future in return. There are all sorts of annuities and they are used in a variety of ways, including by company pension plans. Many people make them part of a retirement portfolio because they can offer tax advantages and, in some cases, guaranteed* returns.

Immediate Annuities: An immediate annuity begins payments (usually on a monthly basis) one up to three months after it is purchased. Immediate annuities are most appropriate for individuals who are in immediate need of a stream of regular income.
Deferred Annuities: A deferred annuity delays payments until some point in the future. During the waiting period, the annuity grows in value and the payoffs increase.
Single-Premium Annuities: A single-premium annuity is purchased with one lump-sum payment. There are no subsequent premium payments. Immediate annuities must be purchased in this way.
Flexible-Premium Annuities: This type of annuity is purchased through an initial minimum payment, after which additional payments may be made by the contract holder. This premium payment plan is attractive to investors who want to gradually accumulate increasing value in an annuity.
Fixed Annuities: A fixed annuity guarantees a minimum fixed rate of return. A fixed annuity also may guarantee a higher rate of return for a certain period. Fixed annuities are guaranteed contracts; the insurance company guarantees that it will fulfill its obligations to the annuity owners.
Variable Annuities: Investors can choose where to invest their payments. The rate of return and size of the payments investors eventually receive varies depending on the investment performance. For an additional charge, variable annuities can guarantee minimum income even if markets decline and help increase retirement income by potentially locking in market gains.
Tax-Deferred Annuities: A tax-deferred annuity is an interest-bearing contract offered by an insurance company. Tax-deferred annuities have two distinct phases: the accumulation phase and payout phase. During the accumulation phase, interest earnings are retained in the account and the balance grows. During the payout phase, account proceeds are paid out in one of many ways.
Other Annuity Information: Tax-deferred annuity withdrawals made prior to age 59 1/2 are subject to 10% federal tax penalty and surrender charges may apply. Gains from tax-deferred investments are taxable as ordinary income upon withdrawal.
