Federal Stafford Loans

How to Begin?
Follow the "Step-by-Step Guide." If you discover you'll need additional funds, take advantage of American Eagle's education loans.

Subsidized and Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans are low-interest loans made to qualified students by the Credit Union through the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP). They're written for one year and allow a student to reapply each year he or she is in school. 10 year maximum repayment

Subsidized

Federal government pays the interest on the loan until repayment begins and during any deferment periods. Repayment does not begin until six months after the student leaves school.

Unsubsidized
Interest is paid by the borrower while in school or can be deferred until after separation from school.

Student VISA® Card

Students learn financial responsibilityVISA® Logo
When children are going away to school, many parents want to offer the security and ease of a Student VISA® card. For students in grade nine or higher, a Student VISA® card is not only a convenient substitute for carrying cash, it's an opportunity for students to exercise financial independence and establish a credit rating.

Parents set the limit
Parents are an important partner in the Student VISA® program. First they must agree to accept financial responsibility as a co-applicant. At the same time, they know their children best and can request the card's credit limit at a level with which they're comfortable (from $250 to $5,000). American Eagle's Student VISA® card can help students in an emergency and offer parents peace of mind.

Step-By-Step Guide to Subsidized Federal Stafford Loans
As a participant in the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP), American Eagle is a lender of Subsidized and Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans. To see if you qualify, get started with these five steps:

Before you can apply for financial aid, you must be accepted for admission at a college, university or vocational school. Most accredited schools qualify; if in doubt, the FFLEP provides a list of eligible schools.

  1. As soon after January 1st as possible, submit a financial aid application called FAFSA (Free Application For Federal Student Aid). Pick up a FAFSA at a guidance office or financial aid office. The form includes instructions on where it should be sent.

  2. Within four to six weeks, you will receive a student aid report, providing you with (a) your eligibility for Pell Grants, and (b) the amount you can be expected to contribute to the cost of your education (the Expected Family Contribution or EFC). Make a copy of the student aid report for your records and immediately send the original to your school.

  3. Using the student aid report, your school will prepare your financial aid "award package," outlining all the programs for which you qualify. The government requires you to exhaust all scholarship and grant money before you apply for a loan from FFELP.

  4. If you are eligible for a Subsidized Federal Stafford Loan, pick up an application at your school or at American Eagle Federal Credit Union.
